Patricia Anne (Gotham) Smalley

Patricia Anne (Gotham) Smalley passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at the age of 84.  She was the loving wife of the late Edwin Smalley III for almost 54 years and the daughter of the late James Gotham Sr. and Julia (McGuinness) Gotham, and sister of the late James Gotham Jr.

Born in Middleboro in 1938, she attended local schools and graduated in 1956.  Shortly after graduating she met and fell in love with her future husband who was fresh out of the Marines.  Fifteen months later they welcomed the first of five children. 

As the children grew, Pat joined the work force, first as a telephone operator for the Lakeville Hospital and then as a telephone operator for New England Telephone. 

Pat is survived by her children, Marcena Whitehead and her husband Kevin, Scheren Dunham and her husband John, Edwin Smalley IV and his wife Sara, Elizabeth Young and her husband Russell, and Kathleen Dias, nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces, and nephews as well as her crazy cat Rosie. 

Pat was a very crafty person who enjoyed making and selling crafts with her husband under their business name of “The Wife and I”.  In addition to crafting, Pat loved knitting and was known to knit hats for the local homeless shelter.  The afghans she lovingly made for family and friends are heirlooms that will be cherished forever.  Her family will remember has as the Queen of Cribbage, as you couldn’t get out of the house without playing at least one game.  Pat is now reunited with Ted to continue their rivalry over who is the greatest cribbage player of all time. 

Relatives and friends may call on July 6, 2022 (Wednesday) from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. to the O'Neill Funeral Home, 59 Peirce Street (corner of School Street) Middleboro. 

Funeral services on July 7, 2022 (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. 

Private interment in the Massachusetts National Cemetery.
