Marcia ‘Marci’ (Vaz) McGurr, 64 of Halifax, was promoted to Glory on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 after a brief illness. Closing her eyes here on earth, she opened them to see the Face of her Savior, Jesus Christ, Whom she so deeply loved and faithfully served.
Born on November 17, 1957 in New York to her parents, the late Frank and Amelia (Hatch) Vaz, her family moved to Massachusetts, where she would attend public schools in Pembroke, East Bridgewater and graduate with her GED from Weymouth High School, before taking classes at Fisher Junior College. Over the years, she had been employed as a bank teller, activities coordinator at a nursing home, and in retail.
She was the cherished wife of Dennis McGurr, with whom she shared almost 39 years of a
wonderful, Christ-centered marriage. Together, they made their home in Halifax for over 30 years,
where they resided with their beloved dog, Rosie, who adored - and was adored by - Marci. She
was also the sister of Mark Vaz and his wife Sophy of South Korea, and the late Mario Vaz. She
also leaves behind two nieces, Sarah and Katie.
Marci’s first love was Jesus Christ. She was unwavering in her devotion to the Lord and in her
faithful pursuit of knowing Christ deeper through her passionate study of the Word. Referred to
by Dennis as a ‘true Berean’ (Acts 17:11), she could be found studying the Scriptures, with books
and commentaries opened nearby. She exemplified a true student of the Word, always wanting to
dig deeper into God’s Truths and implement them in her life. A member of First Baptist Church
in No. Middleboro, and former member of Duxbury Baptist Church and Grace Bible Church in
East Bridgewater, Marci found great joy in attending Bible Studies with which she was involved.
She recently led a Women’s Bible Study at First Baptist Church, which she concluded only a
month ago. Her diligence in preparing and her faithful leadership of the study will continue to be
a great blessing for a long time to come. Both she and Dennis were faithful to the prayer ministry
of the church, and could always be counted on for an encouraging word and fervent prayer
support, as well as a heart-felt greeting to those visiting the church.
Marci will undoubtedly be missed; yet, we know that she is at Home in the Lord’s Presence where
she stands complete, never again experiencing the pains or sorrows known here on earth. It was –
and would be – her desire that people come to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ and
experience the joy of relationship with Him, just as she did on earth, and does now in Heaven!
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 5, 2022, 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, 111 Plymouth Street in No. Middleboro, MA. Visiting hours have been omitted.
Donations in honor of her life and ministry may be made to: First Baptist Church, 111 Plymouth Street, No. Middleboro, MA 02346.
