John P. Manning, May 24, 1933 – October 13, 2020
John P. Manning, born and raised in Brockton and of late living in Middleboro, MA passed away Tuesday
morning, October 13, 2020 after a brief illness. John graduated from Brockton High School in 1951 and
earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston College in 1955. Commissioned an Ensign in the
Unites States Navy in 1956, John served on several aircraft carriers including USS Saratoga (CV-60), USS
Forrestal (CV-59) as well as a Mediterranean cruise on USS Randolph (CV-15). After his Naval service,
culminating with the rank of Lieutenant, John earned a Master of Education degree from Bridgewater
State College and served as the Science Department Head and a Biology teacher at Bridgewater
Raynham Regional High School, retiring in 1995 after 33 years. In addition, he served as an adjunct
professor at Massasoit Community College. John was a dedicated family man and nothing gave him
more pleasure than spending time with his beloved wife of 60 years, Elizabeth (Bette) J. Manning (MacNeil), enjoying holidays and summer vacations with their four sons Colonel (US Army, Retired) Ed and
his wife Beth of Overland Park, Kansas, Colonel (USAF, Retired) Timothy and his wife Ana Maria Reategui
of Budapest, Hungary, Dennis and his wife Lori of Massachusetts, and John and his wife Cindy, of
Massachusetts and their eight cherished grandchildren. John and Bette enjoyed their retirement by
escaping the harsh New England winters in South Florida and Jekyll Island, Georgia but they lived for the
summer, kayaking on Moose Pond in Bridgton, Maine and spending time on the beach with family and friends. Besides
being snowbirds John and Bette enjoyed traveling the United States and Europe visiting their two
military sons with trips to Hawaii, England, Wales, Germany, Austria, Spain as well as a Pilgrimage to the
Grotto in Lourdes, France. In addition to his immediate family, John is survived by his twin sisters, June
Folger of Nashua, NH and Janet Derrickson of Wilmington, MA. He is predeceased by his father, F. C.
(Clayton) Manning, his mother Jennie B. Manning (Shilonski) and his brothers, F.C. (Frank) Manning
Jr. and Michael J. Manning.
In light of the current restrictions due to the COVID pandemic the family is planning a memorial event for
the summer of 2021.
