George S. MacKay of Middleboro died peacefully and surrounded by his loving family on March 22, 2019. He was 74.
He was born on August 4, 1944 in Boston, son of the late John Hugh and Marguerite (Hoffman) MacKay. George was a graduate of Catholic Memorial High School and Boston State College, where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. A retired educator, he devoted 38 years to the Brockton Public School System, where for 17 of those years he also coached the boys Freshman basketball team. In addition, George worked at Cardinal Spellman High School for several years. In 2008 he was inducted into the UMASS Boston Athletics Hall of Fame for Men's Basketball and Track & Field. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed travel, cherished his grandchildren and enjoyed attending their activities.
Beloved husband of Nancy (Haegeman) MacKay. Devoted father of Michelle and her husband, Christopher Doyle of Bridgewater, Lauren MacKay and her husband, Douglas Leet of Bridgewater. Cherished grandfather of Joseph, Patrick, Kevin, Daniel and Mary Kate. Loving brother of the late John and James MacKay.
Visiting hours Tuesday (March 26, 2019) from 4-8 PM.
Funeral from the O'Neill Funeral Home, 59 Peirce Street (corner of School Street) Middleboro, Wednesday (March 27, 2019) at 9 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Heart Church at 10 AM. Interment Saint Mary Cemetery.
