It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Darlene (Gates) Carmichael, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who left this world on May 13, 2026. Born on February 3, 1956, in the city of Boston, Massachusetts.
Darlene was the cherished daughter of the late Grace and Richard Gates. Her and Grace were very close and she carried her values and love throughout her life. She was a proud graduate of Hyde Park High School.
Darlene dedicated her life to the care and nurturing of others, spending many years as a foster parent. Her home was a sanctuary for children in need, and her heart was a well of kindness and understanding. Through her tireless devotion, she bettered the lives of countless children, offering them a glimpse of hope and love in times of need.
She was a woman of many talents and interests, known for her love of crafting, gardening, and baking. Her creations were a testament to her creativity and her ability to find beauty and joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her garden was a vibrant tapestry of colors, much like the life she led, full of warmth and vibrancy. She loved cooking big family dinners and having everyone together.
Darlene's legacy is carried on by her loving children: David Gates and his wife Katie of Lakeville, MA; Charlene Gates of Freetown, MA; Elizabeth Gates of Lakeville, MA; Donald Carmichael of Freetown, MA; and David Duarte of Fort Lauderdale, FL. Her six cherished grandchildren—Anthony and Alexis Gates of Freetown, MA, and David, Addyson, Paige, and Savannah Gates of Lakeville, MA— they were all the light of her life, and she will forever live on in their hearts. Darlene also leaves behind her step-grandchild, Thomas Morrison of Bridgewater, MA, and a community of family friends who affectionately knew her as "Ma."
Though she and Donald Carmichael were separated for many years, they remained friends. Their friendship was a reminder of the love and respect that anchored their relationship, even in separation.
Darlene was known for her caring and nurturing way, a quality that endeared her to everyone she met. Her home was always open, and her heart was always full, providing a safe haven for anyone in need of love and support.
Her family invites all who knew and loved her to join in honoring her memory and the beautiful life she led.
